Immersion works — living in the language

A short case for immersion over drills.

Why immersion

Immersion means arranging your day so the language finds you, instead of you scheduling appointments with it. Two things change when you do this:

  • The language stops being a subject and becomes a medium.
  • Mistakes surface in context, where they are cheapest to fix.

You do not learn a language and then use it. You use a language and therefore learn it.

The contrast with drill-first study shows up fast. Compare the effort each method demands before you produce a single real sentence — with real meaning a sentence you actually needed:

The point is not that drills are useless. The point is that immersion makes every drill you do afterwards land on something you have already lived.

Start today. Write one paragraph about your morning — in the language.
